In this symposium in honor of Prof. Bal’s retirement we will look back at decades of computer science at Vrije Universiteit and beyond, from the early day onward until today. In particular, we will highlight Henri’s role as one of the pillars on which the reputation of computer systems in Amsterdam rests, and relate personal experiences and anecdotes that concern him. Speakers include Andrew Tanenbaum (Henri’s promotor), Frans Kaashoek and Robert van Renesse (Henri’s contemporaries), Cees de Laat (Henri’s long-time collaborator), and Rob van Nieuwpoort, Lin Wang, Jacopo Urbani, and Herbert Bos (who have all worked in Henri’s group at some point in the past).
